beta-hydroxybutyrate

Fasting fuel molecule

Beta-hydroxybutyrate is a ketone body produced by the liver when the body burns fat for fuel instead of glucose.

It becomes the brain's primary energy source during fasting, starvation, or very low-carbohydrate diets.

Blood levels of beta-hydroxybutyrate indicate whether someone is in ketosis: Her beta-hydroxybutyrate was elevated after three days of fasting.

Often abbreviated BHB.
