kohl

Ancient eye darkener

Kohl is a dark powder, traditionally made from ground antimony or lead sulfide, used as eyeliner.

It has ancient origins in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia, where it was applied to darken the rims of the eyes for cosmetic effect and believed to protect against the sun's glare.

The smoky, dramatic look remains popular: She lined her eyes with kohl for a bold evening look. (Capitalized Kohl is a German surname.)
