Linnaeus

Binomial nomenclature originator

Linnaeus refers to Carl Linnaeus, the 18th-century Swedish botanist who created the system of binomial nomenclature still used to classify living organisms.

His method assigns each species a two-part Latin name consisting of genus and species, such as *Homo sapiens* for humans.

Linnaeus is sometimes called the father of modern taxonomy.

His name appears frequently in scientific names of species, often abbreviated as "L." to indicate he first described them.
