bathyspheres

Underwater observation capsules

Bathyspheres are spherical deep-sea diving vessels lowered by cable from a surface ship.

The steel sphere, equipped with thick glass portholes and life-support systems, allowed early ocean explorers to descend to depths previously unreachable: In 1934, Beebe and Barton descended over 3,000 feet in their bathysphere.

Now largely obsolete, replaced by more maneuverable submersibles.
