Jack

Court card figure

Numerous and often unrelated things are called jack, including a device for raising a heavy object (car jack), a face card bearing a picture of a solider (jack of hearts), who is also a jack, a small, six-pronged object used in the game of jacks, and a small flag.

To jack something is to raise it with a jack.

To jack up prices is to raise them.

To jack up means to ruin something in some way: The hairdresser jacked up my bangs.

When Jack is capitalized, it is usually a male given name, a nickname for John, or an informal designation for any male.
