Trieste

Italy's easternmost harbor

Trieste is a city and seaport in northeastern Italy, at the head of the Adriatic Sea near the Slovenian border.

Long a crossroads of Italian, Slavic, and Germanic cultures, it served as the principal port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1918.

James Joyce wrote much of *Ulysses* while living in Trieste.
