aphotic
Lacking any illumination
Aphotic describes zones or environments where no light penetrates—most commonly the deep ocean below about 1,000 meters, where photosynthesis cannot occur: aphotic depths, the aphotic zone.
The term appears in marine biology and ecology to distinguish lightless regions from the sunlit waters above.
