medieval bard
Lute-playing storyteller
A medieval bard was a professional poet in Celtic cultures—particularly Welsh, Irish, and Scottish—who composed and recited verses praising patrons, commemorating battles, and preserving history.
Bards held official positions in royal courts and noble households, their role combining entertainer, historian, and propagandist.
The bard sang of the king's ancestors and victories.
The term now applies loosely to any poet, especially Shakespeare ("the Bard").
