mock-up

Full-scale preliminary model

A mock-up is a model or replica built to demonstrate or test a design before the real thing is made.

Architects build mock-ups of buildings, designers create mock-ups of products, and web developers present mock-ups of interfaces.

The term implies something provisional—useful for visualization or feedback but not the finished article: We reviewed the mock-up before committing to production.

Also spelled mockup.
