backlots
Outdoor filming areas
Backlots are the outdoor areas of a movie studio where permanent sets are constructed—city streets, Western towns, suburban neighborhoods.
These ready-made environments allow filming without location travel: The chase scene was shot on the studio backlot.
By extension, backlot can describe anything with the artificial quality of a film set.
