rear axle

Back wheel connector

A rear axle is the shaft or assembly that connects the rear wheels of a vehicle, transmitting power from the drivetrain to drive the wheels.

In rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles, the rear axle does the work of propulsion: The rear axle needs replacing.

Front-wheel-drive cars have rear axles too, though these simply support the vehicle rather than deliver power.
