dead axle

Non-rotating wheel support

A dead axle is an axle that doesn't rotate or transmit power—it simply supports weight.

Unlike a live axle, which drives the wheels, a dead axle remains stationary while the wheels spin around it.

Common in trailers and the front of rear-wheel-drive trucks: The trailer's dead axle bore the load while the tractor did the pulling.
