allograft

Same-species transplant tissue

An allograft is tissue or an organ transplanted from one individual to another of the same species.

Most human organ transplants are allografts—kidney, liver, heart—as are common procedures like skin grafts from donors and bone grafts in orthopedic surgery.

The recipient's immune system may reject allograft tissue as foreign, requiring immunosuppressive drugs.

Contrast with autograft (tissue from one's own body) and xenograft (tissue from another species).
