xenograft
Cross-species transplant
A xenograft is tissue or an organ transplanted from one species to another—a pig heart valve implanted in a human, for instance.
The prefix xeno- means foreign or strange, distinguishing these from allografts (same species, different individual) and autografts (same individual).
Xenografts face rejection challenges because the recipient's immune system recognizes the tissue as alien.
