xenotransplant
Animal-to-human organ
Xenotransplant refers to the transplantation of organs, tissues, or cells from one species to another—typically from animals into humans.
Pig heart valves have long been used in cardiac surgery; more recently, genetically modified pig kidneys have been transplanted into human patients.
The prefix xeno- means foreign or strange, distinguishing this from transplants between members of the same species.
