air shaft

Vertical ventilation passage

An air shaft is a vertical passage built into a structure to allow ventilation—bringing fresh air in or letting stale air escape.

In buildings, air shafts run between floors or through walls: The bathroom window opened onto a narrow air shaft.

In mines, they provide breathable air to underground tunnels.
