escape route

Way to freedom

An escape route is a path out of danger or difficulty.

The term applies literally to emergency exits from buildings, evacuation corridors, or passages used to flee pursuit: The fire marshal checked that all escape routes were clearly marked.

Figuratively, it means any way to avoid an unpleasant situation: She always leaves herself an escape route in negotiations.
