culling

Reducing the herd

Culling is the process of selecting and removing animals from a herd or flock, typically weaker or surplus members: The farmer began culling older cattle.

More broadly, culling means sorting through something to remove what's unwanted or inferior: culling outdated files, culling damaged fruit from the harvest.

The word carries a clinical efficiency—reducing numbers for management purposes rather than individual judgment.
