Windrush
Postwar British immigration
Windrush refers to the HMT Empire Windrush, a ship that brought one of the first large groups of Caribbean immigrants to Britain in 1948.
The term now designates that generation of migrants and their descendants, particularly in discussions of British immigration history and identity.
The Windrush scandal (2018) exposed the wrongful detention and deportation of legal residents who arrived as children: My grandmother was part of the Windrush generation.
