Montserrat

Volcanic British isle

Montserrat is a small British territory in the Caribbean, part of the Leeward Islands.

A 1995 volcanic eruption devastated the southern half of the island, burying the capital Plymouth in ash and displacing most of the population.

Montserrat is also a jagged mountain range near Barcelona, home to a famous Benedictine monastery.

The word comes from a Catalan phrase meaning "serrated mountain."
