Vlad the Impaler
Stake-loving medieval ruler
Vlad the Impaler was a 15th-century prince of Wallachia (in present-day Romania) notorious for executing enemies by impalement—driving wooden stakes through their bodies.
His cruelty inspired the vampire Count Dracula in Bram Stoker's novel.
The name appears in discussions of historical brutality or as shorthand for sadistic leadership: He ran the department like Vlad the Impaler.
