philosopher-king
Wise sovereign ideal
A philosopher-king is a ruler who governs with wisdom and philosophical understanding rather than mere power or political skill.
The concept comes from Plato's *Republic*, which argued that ideal states would be led by those trained in philosophy and the pursuit of truth.
The term now applies to any leader who combines intellectual depth with political authority, often used admiringly but sometimes ironically: He fancies himself a philosopher-king, but he's just a bureaucrat with pretensions.
