Carpathian Mountains

Eastern European highlands

The Carpathian Mountains are a major mountain range in Central and Eastern Europe, forming an arc roughly 1,500 kilometers long through Poland, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, and neighboring countries.

The range separates the plains of Hungary from those of Ukraine and contains some of Europe's last remaining old-growth forests: hiking trails through the Carpathians, Transylvania lies within the Carpathian arc.
