Virgil
Ancient Roman poet
Virgil is a male given name, from the Roman poet Publius Vergilius Maro, author of the *Aeneid*.
The name saw modest use in America through the early 20th century: Virgil was my grandfather's name.
In Dante's *Divine Comedy*, Virgil serves as guide through Hell and Purgatory, making "a Virgil" occasionally mean a wise guide or mentor.
