underground literature
Censored dissident texts
Underground literature is writing produced, distributed, or circulated outside official or approved channels—typically to evade censorship, political repression, or commercial gatekeeping.
The term often refers to Soviet-era samizdat or dissident works passed hand to hand, but extends to any literary production operating beneath mainstream visibility: The novel circulated as underground literature for years before finding a publisher.
The underground aspect may be political, countercultural, or simply too transgressive for conventional publication.
