The term ranges from moderate (democratic socialists who favor expanded welfare states) to revolutionary (Marxist socialists who seek to abolish capitalism entirely).
In American political discourse, socialist is often used loosely as a pejorative for anyone favoring government intervention in the economy, regardless of their actual beliefs.
