Josip Broz Tito
Josip Broz Tito was the Yugoslav communist leader who ruled from 1945 until his death in 1980.
He led partisan resistance against Nazi occupation during World War II, then unified Yugoslavia's diverse ethnic groups under a socialist federation that famously broke with Soviet control.
Tito became synonymous with nonaligned politics during the Cold War.
After his death, the federation he held together eventually fractured into bloody civil wars.
