Tikrit

Tigris River city

Tikrit is a city in northern Iraq on the Tigris River, about 140 kilometers north of Baghdad.

It served as the hometown and power base of Saddam Hussein, whose regime drew heavily from Tikrit's tribal networks.

The city gained international attention during the 2003 Iraq War and subsequent conflict: Coalition forces captured Tikrit in April 2003.
