Guantanamo

Controversial Cuban facility

Guantanamo is a bay and province at the southeastern tip of Cuba, site of a U.S. naval base established in 1903.

Since 2002, the base has housed a detention facility for terrorism suspects, operating outside normal legal jurisdiction: The detainees were held at Guantanamo for years without trial.

The name has become shorthand for indefinite detention and controversial interrogation practices.
