IED

Homemade military bomb

An IED is an improvised explosive device—a homemade bomb constructed from available materials rather than manufactured ordnance.

The term became widely known during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, where IEDs caused numerous military and civilian casualties: The convoy was hit by an IED.

Roadside IEDs are typically detonated remotely or by pressure plates. (Lowercase ied is not a standard word.)
