Republican Guard
Elite palace soldiers
Republican Guard is an elite military unit serving as a regime's most loyal and capable force, typically tasked with protecting the head of state and defending the capital.
The term is most associated with Saddam Hussein's Iraq, where the Republican Guard formed the backbone of his military power: Coalition forces engaged the Republican Guard south of Baghdad.
Similar forces exist or have existed in other countries, including Syria and France.
