Strangford Lough

Northern Irish lagoon

Strangford Lough is a large sea inlet in County Down, Northern Ireland—a nearly landlocked tidal lake connected to the Irish Sea by a narrow strait.

The lough is known for its marine wildlife, including seal colonies and diverse seabird populations.

Its name combines English "Strangford" (from Old Norse for "violent fjord," referring to the tidal currents) with Irish "lough" meaning lake.
