harbor pilots
Port entry specialists
Harbor pilots are specialists who guide ships through harbors, channels, and other confined waters.
They board incoming vessels to navigate them safely to port, possessing detailed knowledge of local currents, depths, and hazards that visiting captains lack.
Most major ports require ships above a certain size to take on a harbor pilot: The tanker waited at the pilot station for the harbor pilot to board.
