Troubles
Northern Ireland strife
The Troubles refers specifically to the violent sectarian conflict in Northern Ireland from the late 1960s through 1998, involving Irish nationalists, unionists loyal to Britain, and British forces.
The deliberately understated name became the standard term: He lost his brother during the Troubles, a documentary about the Troubles. (Lowercase troubles means problems or difficulties.)
