spring tide

Moon-aligned ocean extreme

Spring tide refers to the tides of greatest range, occurring twice monthly when the sun, moon, and Earth align during new and full moons.

The gravitational pulls combine to produce unusually high high tides and unusually low low tides.

The term has nothing to do with the season—it comes from the sense of spring meaning to surge or rise.

We scheduled the boat launch for spring tide.
