Palatinate

Count's Rhenish territory

The Palatinate refers to two historically significant regions in Germany: the Lower Palatinate (Rhenish Palatinate) along the Rhine and the Upper Palatinate in Bavaria.

These territories were ruled by the Count Palatine, one of the most powerful princes in the Holy Roman Empire.

The region features prominently in discussions of the Thirty Years' War and German wine production.

The Elector of the Palatinate briefly became King of Bohemia in 1619. (Lowercase palatinate is any territory with such royal privileges.)
