dirndls

Bavarian peasant dresses

Dirndls are traditional Alpine dresses, especially Austrian and Bavarian, consisting of a fitted bodice, full skirt, and apron.

The style originated as peasant clothing but became fashionable folk costume.

Modern dirndls appear at Oktoberfest and similar cultural events: She bought a dirndl for the beer festival.

The word is also used for any dress imitating this style.
