Parthians

Crassus's eastern nemesis

Parthians were the people of Parthia, an ancient empire centered in present-day Iran that rivaled Rome from roughly 250 BCE to 224 CE.

The term appears most often in the phrase Parthian shot—an arrow fired backward while retreating on horseback, a tactic at which Parthian cavalry excelled.

The expression now means any sharp remark delivered while departing: She got in a Parthian shot as she walked out the door.
