Marc Antony
Marc Antony was a Roman general and statesman of the first century BCE, ally of Julius Caesar and later rival of Octavian (the future Augustus).
His political alliance and love affair with Cleopatra of Egypt became legendary, dramatized most famously in Shakespeare's *Antony and Cleopatra*.
His funeral oration for Caesar—"Friends, Romans, countrymen"—is among the most quoted speeches in English literature, though Shakespeare invented it.
