Oxyrhynchus

Egyptian manuscript city

Oxyrhynchus is an ancient Egyptian city about 100 miles south of Cairo, now called el-Bahnasa.

The site is famous for yielding vast quantities of papyrus manuscripts—literary texts, early Christian writings, administrative records—preserved by the dry desert climate.

Scholars refer to this collection as the Oxyrhynchus Papyri, one of the most important archaeological finds for understanding ancient Mediterranean life.
