Hermopolis

Hermopolis was an ancient Egyptian city sacred to Thoth, god of wisdom and writing.

The Greeks named it for Hermes, whom they equated with Thoth.

It served as an important religious and administrative center in Upper Egypt.

The site, near modern el-Ashmunein, contains ruins spanning pharaonic through Roman periods.
