papyrus scrolls
Ancient rolled documents
Papyrus scrolls are ancient documents made from the papyrus plant, used for writing in Egypt, Greece, and Rome before paper became widespread.
The papyrus reed was sliced, layered, and pressed into sheets, then rolled around wooden rods for storage.
Most surviving classical texts came down to us on papyrus scrolls before being copied onto parchment or paper: The Dead Sea Scrolls include papyrus scrolls alongside parchment.
