lunar eclipse
Earth-shadowed full moon
A lunar eclipse occurs when Earth passes between the sun and moon, casting its shadow across the lunar surface.
The moon darkens and often turns reddish—sometimes called a blood moon—as Earth's atmosphere bends sunlight toward it.
Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are visible from anywhere on Earth's night side and safe to watch directly.
