Milky Way

Home galaxy, ours

The Milky Way is the galaxy containing our solar system, visible on clear nights as a faint luminous band of stars stretching across the sky.

The name comes from its pale, milky appearance.

In astronomy, it refers to the entire spiral galaxy—roughly 100 billion stars—of which our sun is one.

On moonless nights you can see the Milky Way.
