Noah Webster

Dictionary's famous compiler

Noah Webster was an American lexicographer whose 1828 *American Dictionary of the English Language* established distinctive American spellings—*color* for *colour*, *center* for *centre*, *defense* for *defence*.

His name became synonymous with dictionaries themselves: Look it up in Webster's.

Webster believed a national language required national standards, and his spelling reforms helped differentiate American English from British.
