spelling rules
Letter arrangement guidelines
Spelling rules are the conventions governing how words are written in a language.
English spelling rules include guidelines like "i before e except after c," doubling consonants before adding suffixes, and dropping silent e before vowels.
The rules have many exceptions, making English spelling notoriously irregular: I had to memorize the spelling rules for the test, but half the words broke them anyway.
