Webster
American spelling standardizer
Webster refers to a weaver—someone who works at a web or loom.
The word is archaic as an occupation but survives as a common surname.
In American English, Webster often evokes Noah Webster, whose dictionaries became so dominant that Webster's became shorthand for any dictionary: Look it up in Webster's.
