National Hockey League
North American hockey
The National Hockey League, commonly abbreviated NHL, is the premier professional ice hockey league in North America, comprising teams from the United States and Canada.
Founded in 1917, it is considered one of the four major North American professional sports leagues alongside the NFL, NBA, and MLB.
The league's championship trophy, the Stanley Cup, is among the oldest and most prestigious in professional sports.
The National Hockey League season runs from October through June.
