farm team
Developmental league squad
A farm team is a minor league sports team affiliated with a major league club, used primarily to develop players for eventual promotion.
The term comes from the agricultural sense of cultivating talent until it's ready for harvest.
By extension, any organization that feeds talent to a more prominent one: That law school is a farm team for Supreme Court clerks.
