Messina

Strait near Etna

Messina is a port city in northeastern Sicily, Italy, situated on the Strait of Messina that separates the island from the Italian mainland.

The city has been a strategic Mediterranean crossroads for millennia, though repeatedly devastated by earthquakes, most catastrophically in 1908.

Shakespeare set much of *Much Ado About Nothing* in Messina, giving the name literary associations beyond its geography.
